Community nurse wins coveted Cavell Star Award

A Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust community staff nurse has been awarded a prestigious Cavell Star Award.

Cavell Star Awards are national awards which are given to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare assistants who shine bright and show exceptional care.

Rita Kirkby was nominated for the Cavell Star Award by fellow community staff nurse Victoria Jewell.

Victoria said: “I am delighted to present this Cavell Star Award to Rita. She is a passionate community staff nurse and is well known by our local GP services, specialist nurses and has a world of knowledge.

“Rita shows exceptional care to all our patients and has given lots of extra hours to nursing to support patients who are coming to their last days of life. She offers a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear and support for patients who need urgent care.

“Not only does Rita do an amazing job for our patients, she also supports our staff too.

“As a community nurse with many years of experience and now working within our Hub, Rita often offers a guiding hand to many newly qualified nurses, health care assistants and students.

“Personally, and on behalf of our Trust, I’d like to thank Rita for all her years of service.

“We are so grateful for such a kind, friendly and supportive person amongst our team. She demonstrates a positive attitude, dedication and resilience within her role, all with a smile on her face.”

Rita said: “I was surprised to receive the Cavell Star Award. Being a nurse is a privilege.

“Going into clients’ homes to give care and support is the most rewarding job that anyone could wish for.

“It is humbling to realise that my colleagues value my professional opinions and experience. We strive to embody teamwork, supporting and helping each other.”
