Benefits of physical activity for people with type 2 diabetes to be explored during webinar

Healthcare professionals are invited to learn about five key components of physical activity that are beneficial to people living with type 2 diabetes during an online event in September.

Diabetes teams will be provided with information on the 5 S’s’ concept – an evidence-based framework which promotes the benefits of sitting, stepping, sweating, strengthening and sleeping.

Taking place on Wednesday, September 4, at 7pm, the session will highlight how physical behavioural changes can have a significant positive impact on the long-term health outcomes of individuals living with diabetes.

The 5 S’s’ concept is an integral part of the ADA/EASD 2022 consensus report, and this webinar will review the supporting evidence.

Dr Sarah Davies, a GP Partner in Cardiff with a special interest in diabetes, will lead the online session.

At the end of the webinar, attendees will have:

  • Learned how interrupting long periods of sitting every 30 minutes can positively affect glycaemic control

  • Explored the evidence supporting the goal of 10,000 steps a day and recognise that any increase in daily steps can lead to significant health benefits

  • Understood how regular aerobic activities, particularly those that induce sweating, can lower blood pressure and improve HbA1c levels

  • Discovered the importance of strength training in type 2 diabetes management, particularly for addressing early onset frailty and sarcopenia

  • Gained insights into the growing evidence supporting the role of sleep quantity, quality, and chronotype, in metabolic health outcomes.
